The sheath shouldn't make any sound or somehow obstruct you when moving your quality knives. Normally, it's made of the material that doesn't absorb any moisture, won't rust the blade, can't get cracked, torn apart or dry rot: nylon and kydex, as they are both very durable. Covered with kydex from within, outer all are nylon. Same as other parts of the combat knives, it shouldn't reflect illumination.
